The main objective of this training course is to develop skills for solving problems with information systems that support companies. A student who follows this training will have to know the definition and the specification of the functional architectures of information systems and their cooperation (interaction between business processes, data sharing, etc.), to understand the structure and strategies of the company, to establish a dialogue between project supervisor and client, to lead projects integrating the visions specific to each business of the company, to choose and adapt development methodologies and specific tools. Technological evolution in general and Web technology in particular related to information systems engineering require a good understanding of the techniques, standards and tools dedicated to the reuse, integration and interoperability of components software.

Today, everyone agrees that Information Systems (IS) play an essential role in the success of a company. Simply because a company’s growth necessarily requires a large number of activities and therefore a large volume of information to manage from which to draw the best part to make the right decisions. In addition, the observation that we can currently make about our companies, especially state-owned companies, and that their information systems are in poor shape. We then try through this speciality to train students (future entrepreneurs) who will be able to revitalize these companies and create new ones on a good basis.

This training is the continuation of three others (2004, 2008 and 2011) which are each time revised and therefore improved to target real needs from both an academic and a socio-economic point of view.

The specialties offered in our faculty such as Software Engineering generally follow the recommendations of the ACM-IEEE learned societies. The programs offered in this Information Systems course comply with the standards recommended by AIS/ACM (Association for Information Systems/Association for Computing Machinery: www.acm.org/education/curricula-recommendations). This allows easy mobility between the four specialities of the sector.

This revision is being carried out for two reasons: (i) the change made to the second year of the LMD licence, which became a common foundation after the first year and to which we have adhered even though we are a university with a national competition and therefore the third year had to be revised. (ii) comply as much as possible with the recommendations made by learned societies such as ACM, IEEE and AIS. Thus, we have respected the content of the seven essential subjects recommended by AIS-ACM (IS2010 version: www.acm.org/education/curricularecommendations) as we have also renamed our license “Information Systems”.

The knowledge required by a student to achieve the objectives of the IS training can be summarized as follows:

  1. Organization of companies
  2. Information management (structuring, coding, flow, etc.)
  3. mastery of problem analysis, system design and implementation;
  4. mastery of databases;
  5. the life cycle of an IS project;
  6. IT management;
  7. tool mastery.

A graduate in Computer Science with a specialization in “Information Systems” must be:

  1. An expert in the development of information systems and web applications;
  2. Able to master and learn different IS design methodologies;
  3. Able to use different programming paradigms and especially the Object paradigm;
  4. Able to use web tools;
  5. Able to use the latest technologies and must be prepared to adapt quickly to new technologies;
  6. Able to use project management methodologies;
  7. Able to express himself orally and in writing.

Several indicators are used to ensure good pedagogical follow-up and to evaluate students. These indicators include continuous checks, homework, presentations, TPs, absences, etc. Pedagogical Committees are held on average three times per semester.

We have appointed from among the training team teachers who are responsible for each semester, a person in charge of the internships (contacts the companies, in relation with the vice-rectorate of external relations, deals with conventions, etc.). Two student delegates are appointed per section and one student delegate for each group. Teachers with doctoral students provide tutoring for groups of students. The training manager acts as a conductor, coordinates between all these stakeholders, (re)plans events, interacts with the administration, reacts to any stimulus, chairs the CPs and deliberations, etc.

During Semester 5, students are introduced to some advanced research areas and concepts such as business process management, workflow management, e-business, etc. These concepts are developed during the two years of the master’s degree.

Students do a lot of TP to develop classic and web applications using languages and programming environments such as JAVA, PHP My SQL, ORACLE.

During previous training courses, students conducted their IEPTs in companies with agreements signed by our Vice President of External Relations and the company’s management.

For this new training, given the number of students who have become very large and whose management is becoming increasingly difficult, we intend to replace projects in companies with workshops.

Gateways to other specialties

The program of our training complies with the standards indicated by AIS/ACM and therefore we do not encounter many problems with mobility. For example, a student from the MI common base (first or second year) may join our training from any university.

National employability potential

The purpose of this license is to provide solutions to business problems by supporting their IS with IT tools. It is therefore a question of training much more entrepreneurs than graduates. This is made possible, on the one hand, by the content of the insured modules, which are much more oriented towards solving problems at the company level from the point of view of analysis, design and implementation. On the other hand, students do a lot of practical work in addition to the IEPT.

Recruitment at company level remains a challenge in Algeria because most of our companies do not have an IT department. As a result, they are usually satisfied with a computer scientist. Unlike universities, whose tasks are almost all automated and therefore recruit much more computer scientists, for example, the case of the three universities of Constantine, which have recruited a good number of our students.

The advantage of our training is that a student at the end of his training can fly on his own. Many of our students have placed first in the national start-up competitions. Others were Microsoft representatives. Others have set up their own companies: development of applications, websites, logos. Design and installation of electronic bulletin boards (case of the Tidjani Haddam campus of Constantine 1 University), digital publishing, etc.
